Victoria’s new Ison Road Overpass reaches new heights

The Ison Road Overpass project has hit new heights as it progresses towards connecting Wyndham West with the Princes Freeway.

Since December, crews have been diligently at work, having placed and compacted 15,300 truckloads of soil to form towering embankments for the overpass bridge approaches. These embankments, rising to a height of eight metres, now stand as prominent landscape features on both sides of the Melbourne-Geelong railway line at Werribee.

Additionally, significant headway has been made in piling works, with over 1,000 steel-reinforced concrete piles already installed to lay the foundation for the overpass.

Damian Van Dyke, project director at Major Road Projects Victoria, stated that with earthworks and piling works on schedule, the project team is making significant progress in building the foundations for the road and bridge overpass.

“Residents can look forward to better access to surrounding areas and minimised traffic in central Werribee as we continue working with construction partner Decmil to deliver this important project,” said Van Dyke.

The project is bustling with activity, with an average of 60 individuals working onsite daily across various roles, amassing a collective total of over 60,000 hours since construction commenced in November 2023.

Once complete, the four-lane Ison Road Overpass will extend over the Melbourne-Geelong railway line toward the Princes Freeway.

Designed with future needs in mind, the overpass is set to accommodate six lanes, facilitating access for residents to surrounding areas while alleviating traffic congestion in central Werribee, thereby enhancing journey reliability.

The project’s opportunities for active transport will include shared walking and cycling paths over the bridge and a cycling path underneath the bridge.

Expected to be completed by the end of 2025, the overpass is anticipated to cater to nearly 29,000 vehicles daily by 2036.

The Victorian and Australian governments will invest a total $114 million for the project, with Major Road Projects Victoria and construction partner Decmil delivering the new Ison Road Overpass.
