Melbourne's Metro Tunnel project is one of the largest public transport projects ever undertaken in Australia and the first major investment in the City's CBD rail capacity since the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop was completed 30 years ago.

The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury to Cranbourne and Pakenham, with high capacity metropolitan trains and five new underground stations connected by twin nine-kilometre rail tunnels. The project will connect passengers at three city precincts via heavy rail for the first time and provide much-needed relief to the heavily congested Swanston Street and St Kilda Road tram corridor, currently the busiest in the world.

The project support initiatives include tram network changes, signalling upgrades, the introduction of new and additional rolling stock and a range of wider network enhancement in order to provide more trains more often.

The presentation will cover:

  • Why we need Metro Tunnel
  • An overview of what the Project will deliver
  • Construction approach
  • Approval requirements
  • Project constraints and challenges
  • Overview of the station designs
