Works start on $276M Berrybank Wind Farm

Construction works have begun on the $276 million Berrybank Wind Farm project, which is set to generate enough energy to power around 138,000 homes.

The 43 turbine project will be built by Global Power Generation (Naturgy Energy Group), and is part of the Victorian Government’s Victorian Renewable Energy Target (VERT) of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030.

Berrybank Wind Farm is set to create 213 construction jobs and 24 apprenticeships, with wind turbine assemble to recommence in Australia for the first time in ten years.

Vestas Renewable Energy Hub, located on the former Ford site in Geelong, will build the turbines for the project.

To support ongoing turbine maintenance, wind turbine technician training will also be delivered in Ballarat by Federation University.

The 180-megawatt windfarm is part of the VERT, which aims to develop 900 megawatts of new clean energy. It is expected that achieving the VERT 2025 target of 40 per cent will drive around $7.2 billion of investment and create more than 10,000 jobs.

“This is an exciting next step in driving down energy prices, reducing carbon emissions and creating jobs as we work towards our renewable energy target of 50 per cent by 2030,” Victorian Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the State Government was driving down the energy costs for families, supporting local businesses and creating thousands of jobs.

“Victoria is the renewable energy capital of our nation and thanks to this investment, we’ve put Western Victoria right at the centre – this is great for jobs and great for our state.”
