Victoria fast tracks two level crossings removal projects

The Victorian Government has fast tracked level crossing removals at Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer and Robinsons Road in Deer Park.

The Victorian Government has fast tracked level crossing removals at Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer and Robinsons Road in Deer Park.

The Robinsons Road level crossing will be removed with a road underpass, and the Fitzgerald Road level crossing with a road overpass. Both of the designs will aim to minimise disruptions to train services and the community.

Since 2012 the level crossings have had 18 near misses. Congestion also causes delays for the 53,000 commuters that use the crossings daily with boom gates down for 45 per cent of the morning peak.

Removal of these two level crossings will set up for the nearby Mount Derrimut Road level crossing to be removed by 2025. This will remove the last of the level crossings between Deer Park and Melbourne CBD.

Site investigations and engineering assessments have been undertaken at the sites for a few months. The level crossing works are also expected to be complimentary to the Western Roads Upgrade.

With designs confirmed the project team is seeking community feedback on aspects of design and construction.  Works are set to begin in early 2021.
