Multiplex has topped out the second stage of construction on the final stage of NEXTDC’s S3 data centre, located at 2 Broadcast Way, Artarmon on Sydney’s Lower North Shore.
The second stage of the centre includes 12,000 square metres of data hall space and ancillary infrastructure on a site area of 12,513 square metres.
Regional Managing Director of Multiplex NSW, David Ghannoum said the topping out of the final construction stage had been delivered with several separable portions located across the site, and amongst global uncertainty with procurement and supply chain challenges.
“We are pleased to reach this noteworthy milestone for NEXTDC’s landmark data centre, continuing our collaboration after the successful delivery of Stage 1 in July, and previously S2 Sydney in 2020,” said Mr Ghannoum.
“It is a credit to the dedication and agility of our Multiplex team and our subcontractor partners.”

The building, designed by architects Greenbox, stands nine levels above ground (approximately 50 metres in height) and caters to the increasing demand for data storage and secure cloud systems as the use of digital services accelerates. The NEXTDC S3 Data Centre Project has also employed a total of over 3,090 workers to date.
NEXTDC’s S3 Sydney interconnects to the existing S1 and S2 Sydney data centres and into NEXTDC’s broader national digital infrastructure platform.
It incorporates a variety of amenities including workspaces, a 100-space car park, and over 3,000 square metres of office space.
“S3 Sydney topping out completion highlights NEXTDC’s focus upon the effective collaboration and close-knit working relationships we develop with our strategic partners. Our successful relationship with Multiplex is a wonderful example of this. Together, we have demonstrated world class design, construction, and innovation capabilities at every stage of the S3 development,” said NEXTDC Chief Operating Officer Simon Cooper.
According to Multiplex, the hybrid scheme structure achieved program and cost benefits.
“The structure uses a combination of reinforced and post-tensioned concrete with structural steel K brace frame for lateral support in lieu of the more conventional concrete shear walls, in turn saving significantly on time and cost,” explained Mr Ghannoum.
The NEXTDC S3 facility recently achieved the rating of Tier IV Certification from the Uptime Institute for Stage 1.
This classification is a globally recognised standard for certifying the 100% uptime guarantees for reliability, security, and performance to ensure data protection and business continuity. It also emphasises levels of resilience, providing the maximum amount of redundancy for power and cooling.
Construction of Stage 2 and all other separable portions of NEXTDC’s S3 Sydney data centre is on track for completion in April 2023.
