Works will begin to prepare the site of the Werribee Street level crossing removal in Melbourne, ahead of major construction on a new rail bridge.

Site offices will be set up at the site along Cottrell Street, with workers locating and relocating underground services such as electricity and water, and clear trees and vegetation within the project area.

The level crossing will be removed by the construction of a rail bridge over the existing crossing, which will also cater for future network improvements planned as part of the Western Rail Plan and Suburban Rail Loop.

Throughout April and May 2020 there will be some temporary disruptions in the immediate area, including changes to car parking and the bus stop on Cottrell Street between Greaves and Werribee Streets, as well as some temporary lane closures during off-peak times between 9.30am and 3pm.

Once the essential preparation is complete, crews will begin piling for bridge foundations and a temporary track. This will minimise disruption to important freight services during construction.

Raising the rail line between the Werribee Racecourse and Werribee River will also create new open space and complement Wyndham City Council’s investment in Wyndham Park. Discussions are ongoing to finalise this space.

An alliance of McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott MacDonald and Metro Trains Melbourne, in partnership with the Level Crossing Removal Project, was been awarded the contract to deliver the project.
