Brisbane auction sees construction and transport markets hit high gear

Brisbane auction sees construction and transport markets hit high gear

Ritchie Bros.’ recent Brisbane auction proved to be a huge success, especially for sellers in the transport construction sectors. Buyers travelled from different regions, chasing all types of equipment, but also made their auction purchases online, creating great results for all equipment sold.

Dale Spedding, Ritchie Bros. regional sales manager, was at the auction where more than 200 prime movers, trucks, trailers and construction equipment sold. He says the strong results were not surprising after hearing market feedback that major works had started not only in South East Queensland, but all up the east coast and into the Northern Territory.

“We were expecting a strong day overall leading up to the sale and the market reacted positively to the large inventory,” said Spedding.

“We not only got buyers from a local region, but from all over Australia.”

Besides strong pricing in transportation, key successful highlights of the auction were articulated dump trucks, thanks to an increase in major industry and housing developments, and a noted increase of strength in the mining sector. Most mining equipment that had been parked for a while was now being placed into work. An example of this: the lack of low-hour D10/D11T dozers in the current market.

“The dozers are no longer there, or the ones that are don’t stay on for long,” said Spedding of the low-hour machines.

“It’s not just late-model, low-kilometre equipment doing well. Older equipment with good service and maintenance history is also doing well. It shows that any equipment with a good history will get a better return because it gives the buyers confidence.”

Spedding says right now the market has a strong demand for transport trucks and good, low-hour earthmoving equipment. He expects this demand to carry over into Ritchie Bros.’ next auctions in Brisbane (August 24) and Geelong (September 14), and well into the next 12 to 18 months. And since trucks and trailers often go hand-in-hand, the incline in truck demand will lead to raise in the demand for trailers.

Ritchie Bros. prides itself on being transparent and efficient, creating a one-stop shop for buyers and sellers alike. Part of that commitment to transparency is publishing all auction results free at rbauction.com.au. There you can see selling prices for all equipment sold at auctions in the past two years. It’s a popular way for customers to learn current market value for equipment, which helps them make decisions about when to buy and sell.
