Assembly begins on Melbourne Metro TBMs

Tunnel boring machines (TBM) for Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel are being assembled in North Melbourne, one year since ground was first broken at the site.

Tunnel boring machines (TBM) for Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel are being assembled in North Melbourne, one year since ground was first broken at the site.

It is the first of four TBMs that will be assembled and launched to dig the massive infrastructure project.

Over the past three weeks, crews have been lifting and lowering pieces of the TMB into the station box to be assembled. When completed and launched, the TBM will excavate around 100,000 cubic metres of rock and soil.

Coloured red, the TBM is named after Victoria’s first Premier, Joan Kirner.

Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews said the works were part of the State Government’s Suburban Transport Blitz, which aims to create thousands of jobs through road and rail projects.

“Crews are working around the clock to put these massive machines together, which will dig the Metro Tunnel, untangle the city loop, and deliver more trains more often across Melbourne,” Andrews said.

The Suburban Transport Blitz also includes Melbourne’s biggest upgrade of power, signalling and communications over the winter.

Buses will replace trains on the Pakenham, Cranbourne and Frankston lines between Flinders Street and Caulfield from July 6 to 14 while the works take place.

Coaches will also replace trains between Wendouree and Southern Cross on the Ballarat line from June 24 to July 7.

“Soon these massive tunnel boring machines will be digging underneath our city to run more trains more often. We thank passengers for their patience whilst we get this work done,” Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said.
