SafeWork NSW is reminding those planning do-it-yourself home renovations to be aware and know how to identify possible locations of asbestos before they start.
The campaign will take place during National Asbestos Awareness Week 2020.
Department of Customer Service Deputy Secretary of Better Regulation Rose Webb said while COVID-19 remains at the forefront of minds, it is vital to be aware about the risks of exposure to asbestos and the importance of knowing how to keep yourself and others safe.
“For anyone thinking about a summer renovation, make sure you’re aware of where asbestos might be found so you know how to stay safe,” Webb said.
“If you are in any doubt, call a licensed asbestos professional for advice because asbestos can be found in more places than you think.”

A licensed asbestos professional must be used for removal of all friable asbestos and for the removal of more than 10 metres of non-friable asbestos. It is recommended to us a licensed asbestos removalist to remove any amount of asbestos.
Webb said SafeWork NSW is committed to keeping workers safe from asbestos and other hazardous dusts and has recently launched its NSW Dust Strategy 2020-2022.
“If your home was built before the 1990s there’s a good chance it has asbestos,” Webb said.
“Asbestos was used in hundreds of building materials, commonly found in bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens as well as behind tiles and under flooring.
“Just like plumbing and electrical work, asbestos removal, or any jobs around the home that might uncover asbestos, is always best left to the experts.”
