Six Australian projects shortlisted for Infrastructure awards

Six infrastructure projects in Australia have been named finalists in Bentley Systems’ annual Year in Infrastructure awards series, which celebrates and commends those who are advancing the design, construction and operations of infrastructure using Bentley products.

Fifty-seven finalists were selected in total, from 420 nominations submitted by 340 organisations, with the finalists chosen by 12 independent jury panels.

The six Australian finalists are:

  • Lendlease Engineering – New bridge over the Richmond River at Broadwater, Ballina, NSW.

As part of the Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade in NSW, Lendlease Engineering was contracted to design and construct a new bridge over the Richmond River, which was set to be designed as a visual landmark. Lendlease used Bentley software to implement a collaborative 3D BIM and 4D construction management strategy.

  • Arup Australasia Project Systems Team from Brisbane, Queensland.

The engineering and design firm has established the Australasian Project Systems Team to administer and customise its vast and complex document system. The team uses Bentley’s ProjectWise to provide an integrated Connected Data Environment to support the entire project team, ensuring that best practices are adopted and maintained to reduce potential errors and ensure data reuse for every project.

  • CADDS Group – Rio Tinto Iron Ore Sentry Guarding Project at Dampier, WA.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore retained CADDS Group to conduct a site audit for its mine and port facilities in WA, complete site verification for high-risk assets, and replace or update those assets. CADDS Group used Bentley’s BIM and reality modelling technology to create 3D reality meshes for inspection of existing structures, and to create 3D design models for replacement or renovation of the structures where needed.

  • Northern Engineering & Technology Corporation – SINO Iron Ore Mine in Perth, WA.

Northern Engineering & Technology Corporation used Bentley software to implement a combined design and construction concept that focused on modular construction for the design and construction of the SINO Iron Ore Mine project in Perth, WA.

  • Skand – Building Envelope Inspection Powered by Machine Learning and Reality Modelling for RMIT University Brunswick Campus, Victoria.

As part of RMIT’s building inspection project for its ISO-certified asset lifecycle program, Skand captured aerial and ground images of the Brunswick campus buildings. With Bentley’s ContextCapture, Skand used the images to create an inspection report and a 3D reality mesh of the campus for ongoing asset inspection powered by machine learning and reality modelling.

  • Communications Networks – Brisbane, Queensland.

SiteSee created highly accurate 3D reality meshes of communication towers for Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications service provider. SiteSee used unmanned aerial vehicles to capture images of the towers, while Bentley’s ContextCapture software to generate the reality meshes needed to create condition assessment reports. This practice improved precision and reduced the costs and safety concerns involved with typical asset inspections.

“We are pleased to acknowledge and celebrate these projects in Australia that have been named as finalists in Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure 2018 awards program,” said Brian Middleton, vice president, regional executive for Bentley Systems.

“These projects are among the 57 selected this year, which represent the most outstanding digital advancements in infrastructure by Bentley software users around the world.”

Winners will be announced on October 18 at an awards ceremony and gala during Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure 2018 conference, which takes place in London.
