SA continues cash splash into sports infrastructure

A $17.6 billion stimulus package has been announced for businesses and households to deal with challenges posed by the spread of the coronavirus.

Around $20 million is up for grabs to help upgrade South Australian sports infrastructure, through the state’s Infrastructure Projects 2021-22 grant program.

The $20.6 million in funding is made up from the Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program 2021-22 ($5.6 million), Grassroots Facilities Program Round 2 ($10 million), and the Regional and Districts Facilities Program Round 2 ($5 million).

The grants come a week after the South Australian Government provided $24 million in infrastructure grants to sporting clubs and organisations across the state.

Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister Corey Wingard said the State Government’s commitment to ongoing infrastructure funding means South Australians can continue to access quality recreation and sport activities and facilities for many years to come.

“Last week we awarded more than $24.3 million in grants to sporting infrastructure projects right across South Australia, as part of the biggest ever investment in grassroots sport in the state’s history,” Wingard said.

“The projects funded to date will deliver more than $57 million in project value across 39 different sports and many recreational activities.

“I’m excited to build on this momentum and continue to provide support in this area by giving the sport and recreation community another opportunity to share in a multi-million-dollar cash boost.”

Eligible sport and recreation groups and local councils who wish to update their sporting facilities, are encouraged to apply and should focus on how their project promotes multi-use/multi-user experiences and high participation rates from across a region.

Wingard said when SA clubs win, everybody wins.

“The development of core infrastructure, community hubs and well-designed facilities increases participation rates in sport and recreation activities,” he said.

“This aligns with the objectives of our Game On: Getting South Australia moving initiative which aims to get South Australians moving and enjoying the many social, health and lifestyle benefits sport and recreation provide.”
