Retail redevelopment worth $142M begins in Sydney

A disused industrial warehouse will become part of Sydney’s Marrickville Metro shopping centre, with works commencing to incorporate the space into AMP Capital’s $142 million redevelopment.

Construction company ADCO will carry out the construction works to extend the existing metro centre in Sydney’s inner-west. It aims to increase its floor space by 30 per cent, with two levels of retail and three levels of parking.

The upgrade will provide a space for an additional 44 retailers, including supermarket Coles, which will take up tenancy. Other spaces will include leisure outlets and an al fresco dining area.

Marrickville’s upgraded shopping centre aims to maintain a distinct inner west style and will make use of existing warehouses and showcase local artists within the design, led by architecture company Hames Sharley.

A pedestrian bridge will link the existing Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre with the new development, with safe crossing zones installed at street level.

The development is in its second phase, after a successful development of the Victoria Road public entrance to the centre.

Construction is expected to last for around 20 months, to be completed in late 2020.
