The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) has released a new Australian certification program for steel businesses in a bid to support sustainability in the sector.
The ASI Steel Sustainability Australia certification program assures that steelwork provided by certified suppliers is sustainably made and processed; and sourced through responsible and ethical supply chains.
The organisation’s sustainability manager Jerusha Beresford said the new program provides a clear pathway for steel businesses to operate more responsibly and transparently; and support sustainable outcomes in the construction industry including progressing the circular economy and reducing embodied carbon.

The Steel Sustainability Australia certification program is a recognised initiative under the Green Building Council of Australia Responsible Products Framework and Green Star rating system, and replaces the former ASI Environmental Sustainability Charter.
A tiered certification model allows steel businesses to gain ‘good or best practice’ product recognition for their steel products in the Green Star Buildings rating tool.
The certification program is open for applications at www.steelsustainability.com.au.
Founded by BlueScope, InfraBuild, Liberty Primary Steel and Stramit Building Products, ASI is a peak body representing the Australian steel industry.
