The winners of Master Builders Australia’s 2022 National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards were announced at a gala dinner on 26 November 2022 in the Hunter Valley NSW.
Multiplex Constructions came out on top winning the National Construction Master Builder of the Year Award for their work on the upcycled Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney.
Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn said Multiplex’s 50-storey tower will further support Sydney’s future as a green city.
“Multiplex was required to overcome key construction challenges of building movement, complex demolition and strengthening works, large cantilevered elements, and concurrent construction across multiple fronts,” she said.
Ms Wawn also congratulated the 51 award categories and finalists for their achievements.
“The pre-eminent national awards for the industry was the first time it returned to its normal face-to-face format following disruptions from the pandemic,” she said.

“The annual three-day event culminates in the announcement of the country’s best builders in residential, commercial and civil construction and recognises the projects that have won them acclaim.
“To be in the running for a National Excellence Award, entrants must have progressed from winning awards in their State or Territory and must be nominated by their local Master Builders Association to be judged for a national award.”
Other award winners included National Residential Master Builder of the Year Spadaccini Homes for their Hirniak residence project in Western Australia, a build that Ms Wawn said reflects the highest quality workmanship.
Vos Construction & Joinery took out the 2022 National President’s Award for their work on the My State Bank Arena in Tasmania. Ms Wawn said the complex project encompassed civil, renovation, newbuild and fit-out.
“Vos Construction & Joinery employed a unique management structure and provided a masterclass of technical skill to overcome construction obstacles,” added Ms Wawn.
In addition to celebrating successful businesses, the awards recognise the hard work of up and comers in the industry.
Tasmanian local Zac Smith was awarded National Apprentice of the Year for his high degree of intelligence, a positive attitude and outlook, and a keen passion for work.
“Zac’s outstanding efforts on site were also reflected by his TAFE results,” said Ms Wawn. “His understanding of the importance of WHS and respecting others on a work site saw him become a sought-after team member and offered additional project responsibilities.”
Andrew Kerr from the Northern Territory won Toyota National Young Builder of the Year for his managerial skills in delivering quality projects on time and within budget. Andrew is the founder of commercial and residential building company AusCon NT.
“Born and raised in Alice Springs, Andrew is passionate about the local community of Alice Springs and aims to build a lasting reputation through supporting local businesses and working on construction projects for the betterment of the local community and its people,” said Ms Wawn.
The event went ahead with the support of platinum sponsors Toyota, CBUS, MYOB and major sponsors WoodSolutions, the Timber Framing Collective, Master Builders Insurance Brokers, the National Careers Institute and the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner.
“The National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards couldn’t take place without the generous support of our sponsors,” said Ms Wawn.
“The building and construction industry has demonstrated that in the face of adversity, it continues to provide the highest quality outcomes for clients around the country.”
