A $40 million contract to manufacture precast concrete tunnel segments for the Cross River Rail project has been awarded to a Toowoomba-based construction company.
Cross River Rail Minister Kate Jones announced Wagners as the contractor, which will manufacture all of the precast concrete tunnel segments for the 10.2 kilometre rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills.
The deal, which is expected to span a nine month period starting late 2020, will see the segments made at Wagner’s facility at Wacol before being installed in the rail line’s 5.9 kilometres twin tunnels. These tunnels will stretch underneath the Brisbane river and CBD, with the tunnelling expected to begin in 2021.
Jones said the announcement of this contract is “just the beginning” of what Cross River Rail would mean for Queensland companies during construction.
“This is exactly the kind of economic growth and job creation that we have promised Cross River Rail will mean for Queensland,” Jones said.

Jones said the Queensland Government’s number one priority is to create jobs for Queenslanders and this project will enable that goal.
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the sheer scale of opportunity for Queensland companies was only just beginning to reveal itself.
“We have awarded contracts for three major works packages and construction consortiums that have been awarded those contracts are now sub-contracting works to a wide variety of companies as workforces are established at sites right across the city,” he said.
