John Holland to deliver final section of tunnelling for Sydney Metro West

John Holland, together with joint venture partners CPB Contractors and Ghella, is set to deliver the final section of tunnelling for the Sydney Metro West project.

CEO Joe Barr said John Holland was proud to be leveraging its tunnelling expertise on another major project for Sydney.

“Delivering complex, city-shaping transport projects that transform lives is in our DNA at John Holland,” he said.

“We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Sydney Metro to deliver the final tunnelling package for Sydney Metro West – which will transform public transport connections between the city’s major growth centres.

“From Sydney Metro Northwest to the Metro Tunnel in Melbourne, our talented team has a proud track record of delivering some of the country’s biggest tunnelling projects.”

John Holland will soon commence design and construction work for the Sydney Metro West – Eastern Tunnelling Package which includes construction of 3.5-kilometre tunnels under Sydney Harbour between The Bays and Sydney CBD, and excavation and civil works for two new cavern stations at Pyrmont and Hunter Street in Sydney CBD.

The Eastern Tunnelling contract also includes a tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch site at The Bays with two TBMs launched towards Hunter Street; a turnback cavern to the east of the new Hunter Street Station, allowing trains to turn around before travelling back towards Parramatta; and more than 8,000 segments to line the tunnels.

Sydney Metro’s City & Southwest project will deliver a further 15.5 kilometres of twin railway tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham, and six new metro stations, including one at Waterloo. City & Southwest, which includes the rail crossing deep under Sydney Harbour, is scheduled to open in 2024, following on from the opening of the Northwest metro line in May 2019.

Starting at The Bays, tunnel boring machines will cross the harbour near the Anzac Bridge, before heading to the new Pyrmont Station and then under Darling Harbour before reaching Hunter Street Station in the heart of the CBD.

Once completed, Sydney Metro West will double rail capacity between greater Paramatta and the Sydney CBD, with travel times of around 20 minutes between the two centres.

Preparations for tunnelling on this final section of the line will start in 2023 with Sydney Metro West on track to be completed in 2030.
