Inland Rail selects project manager

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has appointed a company to enhance project governance and support decision making for the $10 billion Inland Rail project.

Turner & Townsend has will undertake Programme Management Office (PMO) services to help the project’s processes and accelerate the speed of delivery for the Inland Rail project.

The PMO will operate out of the ARTC’s Brisbane-based offices.

Inland Rail CEO Richard Wankmuller said the contract will be supported by SNC-Lavalin.

“We are very pleased to have the expertise of Turner & Townsend on board as we ramp up work on Australia’s biggest rail infrastructure project,” Wankmuller said.

“With construction now underway on the Parkes to Narromine section and comprehensive design work progressing across other parts of the 1700-kilometre route, we welcome the additional structure and support that comes with the PMO being entrenched as a hub of the Inland Rail organisation.”

“The PMO will assist us to develop robust and comprehensive approaches to project governance, assurance, project controls and reporting, as well as fine tune some of our existing processes, augment our current team and help accelerate delivery of the overall Inland Rail Programme.”

Turner & Townsend Director of Infrastructure, Australia and New Zealand, Darren Munton, said the company’s PMO team has experience working on projects such as the Western Sydney Airport, Sydney Metro, METRONET, Crossrail and High Speed 2.

“These insights and lessons learnt will be shared with the Inland Rail team and will benefit the overall Program by creating an environment of continuous improvement, professional collaboration and innovation to address the challenges inherent in projects of this scale and complexity,” Munton said.

Turner & Townsend Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, Anooj Oodit, said the opportunity to work on a transport development of Inland Rail’s scale was significant.
