Fortescue awards $24M bulk earthworks contract

Mining company Fortescue Metals Group has awarded a bulk earthworks and roads contract at its Eliwana iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Under the terms of the $24 million contract, BGC Contracting will carry out construction for the Eliwana site’s permanent accommodation village and access road, as well as a 16-kilometre construction access road and airstrip for use by flying doctors.

In addition, the company said its work developing the site’s initial roadworks would “facilitate connection to near-future construction packages to rail and other infrastructure.”

Fortescue’s in-development Eliwana project, which lies around 90 kilometres to the west of Tom Price, will bolster the company’s iron ore presence in the region, adding to the Cloudbreak, Christmas Creek and Solomon sites.

Scheduled for first production in December 2020, the $1.7 billion project is expected to produce around 30 million tonnes of iron ore a year over its life.

BGC Contracting chief executive officer Greg Heylen said the contract was a major achievement for the company’s diversification strategy.

“There has been a real increase in resource sector and construction opportunities, particularly in Western Australia and Queensland, and we look forward to this next phase in our growth strategy,” he said.

The contract strengthens BGC Contracting reputation for supporting bulk commodity miners through construction and mining.
