Expression of Interest open for Victoria’s new hospital

Expression of Interest is now open for a consortium to deliver Victoria’s new Melton Hospital.

Delivery of the project includes the design, construction, finance and maintenance of the new hospital, which is set to be one of Victoria’s first hospitals powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.

Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas said the new 24-hour public hospital will provide locals the very best care, closer to home.

“Melton is one of the fastest growing communities in Australia and that’s why we’re building a world-class hospital and finding the right consortium to get it done,” said Minister Thomas.

The project will create more than 2,400 jobs during construction and be delivered as a public-private partnership. Once complete, it will provide 24/7 emergency care with at least 274 beds, an intensive care unit, maternity and neonatal services, mental health services, radiology services and outpatient care.

It will have capacity to treat 130,000 patients each year and see almost 60,000 patients in the emergency department alone.

Member for Melton Steve McGhie said the landmark hospital will transform the region, with it being located close to public transport and the Western Freeway.

“I’m looking forward to working with our Community Consultative Committee to ensure this massive community asset reflects the needs and diversity of the outer western community it’s serving,” he added.

The Victorian Government is seeking candidates from suitably qualified and experienced consortia who have the vision and capability to deliver the project.

Later this year, the shortlisted consortia will be invited to prepare detailed proposals before a preferred consortium is appointed and construction gets underway next year.

The community will be given the opportunity to continue help shape the project with the Community Consultative Committee, chaired by Member for Melton Steve McGhie, set to meet for the first time in February. The group will continue to meet over the coming months to provide input to the hospital’s look, feel and community aspirations.

The project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, in partnership with Western Health, who will operate the hospital. Enabling construction works are underway and major construction is expected to start in 2024 and be finished in 2029.

Victoria’s Melton Hospital is being funded with more than $900 million in the Victorian Budget 2022/23.
