Downer EDI has been named the preferred proponent for the design and construction contracts for the $69 million Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal Project in Western Australia.

The Denny Avenue level crossing will be replaced with a rail-over-road underpass as the nearby Davis Road.

Two separate contracts were open, with  Downer selected for both based on bids which demonstrated the company’s expertise to complete the works.

Construction will include realigning Third Avenue, sinking Davis Road underneath the elevated rail line, creating new cul-de-sacs for Third and Slee Avenues and works on Albany Highway.

Davis Road will also be widened from two to four lanes and three sets of traffic lights will be installed at Albany Highway, Streich Avenue and Railway Avenue intersections.

Civic works will then include supporting the Kelmscott Town Centre revitalisation and extensive landscaping and tree planting.

Downer are finalising designs before confirming their plan to build the redesigned road while minimising community impact.

Early works are already underway and the team is working with third parties to confirm the relocation of underground service utilities in the project area.

Major construction is expected to begin in mid-2020.
