The Queensland Government has chosen a contractor to begin design work on the first projects under the $60 million The Spit master plan.
Southport-based firm Place Design Group has been tasked with creating a welcome space with a unique Gold Coast identity for the Moondarewa Spit foreshore parkland improvements and the Seaway Promenade project.
State Development Minister Cameron Dick said the Queensland Government aims to create special destinations at The Spit that reflect the region’s relaxed, outdoor way of life.
“These areas are loved by locals and visitors alike because they connect people to the natural environment and waterways.
“We’re investing over $5 million dollars to upgrade Moondarewa Spit and the Seaway Promenade, as part of the $60 million master plan, with a focus on protecting and enhancing the environment while improving community facilities and access.

Dick said the design and construction phases of the project are expected to generate at least 16 jobs, unlocking even more jobs as the new facilities attract more visitors to The Spit.
Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) is responsible for delivering these projects on behalf of Queensland Government, and are expected to be completed in time for the Christmas holiday season.
GCWA CEO Hal Morris said the creative design scope covers landscaping, picnic shelters, foreshore restoration, a public amenities block, beach showers, water refilling stations and shared cycling and walking paths.
“We’re excited to be getting on with the job of bringing the community’s vision for The Spit to life,” Morris said.
“We’re asking Place Design Group to come up with designs that will reflect the natural beauty of our waterways city and our relaxed lifestyle.”
Place Design Group Director Clint Wood said they’re delighted to be appointed lead consultant for Moondarewa Spit and the Seaway Promenade.
“The public realm is such a crucial part of the life blood of the Gold Coast, and The Spit has a long history as one of our most important public realms. The preservation and improvement of these areas is a testament to council and the state government’s commitment to strengthening our city,” he said.
“We look forward to enhancing this much-loved destination with improved access, amenity and environmental outcomes, and ensuring an enduring and sustainable future for locals and tourists to enjoy.”
Design works are expected to be completed in three months, with construction due to commence in the middle of this year.
