Contractor awarded St George Hospital Redevelopment Stage 3

Contractor awarded St George Hospital Redevelopment Stage 3

A contractor has been awarded the third stage of the $740 million St George Hospital Redevelopment in south eastern Sydney.

The construction contract has been awarded to BESIX Watpac, with works soon to get underway.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard, together with Member for Oatley Mark Coure, visited the site to mark the major milestone.

“This is a very exciting day for the St George community, with construction about to begin on the $411 million Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct, the third stage of this significant redevelopment,” Mr Hazzard said.

“The new Ambulatory Care Building will be a one-stop-shop for community and out-of-hospital services, bringing together a range of new, enhanced and existing health services into the one location, right next to the St George Hospital Campus.”

Mr Coure said the construction contract includes the delivery of the new building and car parking following a competitive tender process.

“The new facility will meet the health needs of the St George and Sutherland community now and into the future by providing more accessible care for patients, ultimately improving health outcomes,” Mr Coure said.

“The redevelopment will also provide additional inpatient beds, including a specialty Aged Care Unit and a new Acute Brain Injury Unit.”

The $411 million Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct (Stage 3) brings the NSW Government’s total investment at St George Hospital to more than $740 million, with previous projects including the $277 million Acute Services Building, new $43.7 million emergency department, and $11.5 million birth suite and theatre refurbishment.

The Stage 3 St George Hospital Redevelopment will include outpatient, ambulatory and integrated care services; pathology specimen collection; a new day rehabilitation unit; increased sub-acute and rehabilitation inpatient beds; and a sub-acute aged care unit.

In addition, Stage 3 will deliver a behavioural management unit; acquired brain injury unit; palliative care; surgical services with refurbished operating theatres; enhanced diagnostic imaging (medical imaging and nuclear medicine); and a new Clinical Skills Centre.

Further, a new public forecourt and green spaces will provide a welcoming environment that supports patient well-being.

The St George Hospital Redevelopment project received a $26 million funding boost in the 2022-23 State Budget for additional on-site car parking to improve access, bringing the total Stage 3 funding commitment to $411 million.

The redevelopment is part of the NSW Government’s $11.9 billion investment in health infrastructure over the four years to 2025-26. Since 2011, the government has delivered more than 180 health capital projects across NSW, with more than 130 projects currently underway.
