Contractor appointed for Victorian Netball and Hockey Centre upgrade

A contractor has been selected by the Victorian Government to deliver a multi-million-dollar upgrade of the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

Kane Constructions will deliver the project, which will create around 30 jobs during construction.

The upgrade will replace the existing outdoor netball courts, six new indoor courts, a new indoor hockey facility, upgraded change facilities, a creche for parents, and a high-performance strength and conditioning gym.

A new northern entrance will also be built to better connect the centre to public transport.

It aims to cater for all levels of competition and become a major training base for elite athletes in both sports. The upgrade also aims to turn the centre into a world-class venue to host major state, national and international tournaments such as the Hockey Pro-League.

The centre is used by more than 6000 people per week, with 80 per cent being women and girls.

The project is part of a $241.6 million investment into women’s and community sport. The funding package also includes $20 million to redevelop Ikon Park, $13 million for Stage 2 of the Moorabbin Oval redevelopment, $10 million to improve playing conditions at Casey Fields and Whitten Oval, and $2 million for infrastructure upgrades for AFLW at Victoria Park.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the State Government is building a new home for the thousands of Victorians who play netball or hockey every week.

“From elite athletes to grassroot teams, this world-class venue facility will be accessible to all who love sport,” Andrews said.

Victorian Minister for Women Gabrielle Williams said the centre is a hub for female sport in Victoria, with thousands of women and girls using it each week.

“We’re making sure they – and women across Victoria – have the facilities they need to train, compete and get involved.”

Construction is expected to be complete in 2021.
