Melbourne’s Whitehorse City Council has awarded a design and construction contract to Kane Constructions to build the new Whitehorse performing arts centre.
The centre, which will be built on the site of the former Whitehorse Centre in Nunawading, will feature a 626-seat auditorium with larger stage and modern backstage area, a 200-seat studio theatre, a multipurpose rehearsal/dance studio, a multipurpose function space, a large soundshell and amphitheatre for community events and festivals.
“We are excited and honoured to be partnering with Whitehorse City Council, and a consultant team led by BKK Architects, Kerstin Thompson Architects and WSP to deliver what will be a leading, high quality performing arts and cultural facility for the Whitehorse community,” Joint Managing Director of Kane Constructions Richard Frisina said.

The City of Whitehorse has a history of brick and tile manufacturing, and the architectural team has ensured this is included in the design.
Whitehorse Mayor Cr Tina Liu said the new centre will be a place for people.
“The new centre will bring to fruition Whitehorse City Council’s vision to build a modern theatre, festival and function centre that is welcoming, flexible and accessible to all,” Liu said.
“The facility will also benefit the wider community. Throughout the construction phase and longer term, the new centre is expected to create about 320 jobs, both directly and indirectly. Local businesses will also have the opportunity to supply goods and services.”
Construction began in November 2021 and is expected to be completed in late 2023.
