Construction set to start on Victoria’s Altona Pier

Construction set to start on Victoria’s Altona Pier

A local company has been appointed as the lead construction partner for Victoria’s new Altona Pier, with work soon to get underway.

Simpson Construction Co. will build the new pier, which was funded as part of the Victorian Government’s $24 million piers and jetties economic stimulus package.

Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne says the project has been designed with community input from the outset.

“The Altona Pier redevelopment will provide a better and safer destination for anglers, swimmers, and people who simply want to take a stroll,” she adds.

The works include removing the existing pier, and the installation of new steel piles and concrete crossheads to form the substructure of the pier which will feature an accessible low landing, circular seating areas and fishing opportunities.

The new pier will include a 4.2-metre-wide deck constructed from timber, a material suggested during community consultation, and will be easily accessible from Altona’s foreshore.

A branching pier head will stretch 300 metres into Port Philip Bay and provide views across the bay towards Melbourne’s skyline, while weathered timber from the existing pier will be reused in the new pier to incorporate its historic importance.

Construction is scheduled to begin after the summer period to minimise disruptions to the community.

Further rebuilds and critical works at piers and jetties across the state, including at Williamstown, St Leonards, Flinders, Mornington, Rye, St Kilda, Hampton, Warneet, Flinders and Dromana, are also in the pipeline.
