Tasmanian Govt pushes for housing construction

Tasmania has recorded the highest number of monthly dwelling approvals in a decade, with 369 being reported, which is expected to continue according to the state government.

Approvals were up by 14 per cent for the November quarter when compared with the same period a year ago.

The Tasmanian Government said the rezoning of government owned land for new housing developments is set to continue the increase in building construction within the state.

The first set of Housing Land Supply Orders under new legislation includes sites in Rokeby, Devonport, and West Moonah, with the final steps for rezoning the land packages expected to be completed within the coming weeks.

Land identified in the first set of orders is planned to be used for a mix of social, affordable and private housing options.

Tasmanian Minister for Housing, Roger Jaensch, said the government had been active in stimulating the building of homes through a number of policies, including its first home builders incentives, its Affordable Housing Strategy, and reductions on stamp duty on house and land packages.

“The speeding up the supply of affordable housing around the State by fast tracking the rezoning of surplus government owned land was a key action identified from the Housing Summit held last year, and legislation to allow for the streamlined process passed parliament mid last year,” Jaensch said.

“The Tasmanian Government is continuing to identify more land to rezone for housing supply. Along with the private sector, we are continuing to boost affordable and social housing options.

“It is essential that all authorities, including local councils, play their role in ensuring new housing and accommodation options can be developed, particularly in the Hobart area where the need is most acute,” he said.
