Construction wraps on $300M Chatswood Chase redevelopment

Multiplex has completed Vicinity Centres’ $300 million redevelopment of Chatswood Chase on Sydney’s North Shore, transforming the iconic shopping centre into a modern and sustainable retail destination.

Located at 345 Victoria Avenue and 5 Havilah Street in Chatswood, the redevelopment was designed by architectural firms Make and Webber. The project adds 20,000 square metres of new floor space, bringing the total to 84,000 square metres across five levels, and introduces more than 100 new retail tenancies, including the new Chase Market food hall on the Lower Ground floor.

Chatswood Chase is targeting a 4 Star Green Star rating and a 4.5 Star NABERS rating, reflecting its improved sustainability credentials.

Patrick Murphy, regional director at Multiplex, said completing the redevelopment was especially rewarding given the company’s history with the site, having delivered the original Chatswood Chase shopping centre in the early 1980s.

“We’re thrilled to have completed this landmark redevelopment, breathing new life into one of the North Shore’s most iconic shopping destinations,” said Murphy. “It builds on our track record of delivering transformative retail precincts across Australia.”

The redevelopment includes upgraded entrances on Victoria Avenue, Archer Street and Havilah Street, with the main entry featuring a mirror-clad awning and programmable lighting. New skylight atria and voids flood all levels with natural light, while 13 lifts and 26 escalators have been installed to improve accessibility.

According to Multiplex, construction spanned 19 months, with an average of 350 to 400 workers on site, increasing to a peak of 900 during the shopfitting phase. Works were delivered within a live retail environment, with tenants such as Coles, Kmart and David Jones continuing to trade throughout. Staging ensured uninterrupted public access via existing carparks and street entries.

Multiplex led construction of the Chatswood Chase redevelopment, marking a return to the site more than four decades after delivering the original centre.

Construction used 1,000 tonnes of bespoke structural steel, four kilometres of carbon fibre and 15,000 square metres of tiling throughout malls and amenities. Multiplex implemented logistics management software and coordinated material deliveries through the centre’s loading dock, balancing construction and tenant operations.

Temporary catch decks and roof areas enabled work on void areas while keeping lower levels dry and operational. Demolition, structural strengthening and sequencing were required to reconfigure mall layouts, including more than 500 truncations to the existing post-tensioned slab. Plant and services were relocated without interruption to the centre’s operations.

Infrastructure upgrades enhance operational efficiency and mitigate flood risks, including a new 1,000-litre stormwater tank, a syphonic drainage system and automatic flood barriers.

The completion of Chatswood Chase’s $300 million redevelopment marks a new chapter for Sydney’s North Shore retail landscape, defined by design innovation, construction precision and sustainable delivery.
