Q&A with Maykon Capelasso, Transformation Project Manager for Coates Engineering Solutions

Tell us a bit about yourself and what has led you to this professional role?

I studied Industrial Engineering in Brazil and moved here 10 years ago to do a Masters in Supply Chain & Logistics at Sydney University.

Since then, I have worked in a variety of industries, ranging from food and car manufacturing to freight forwarding and construction. These diverse industry experiences as well as mix of operational and corporate roles, broadened my knowledge and allowed me to lead and experience solid end-to-end, transformation changes.

At Coates I now have the opportunity to lead a team that will unlock Engineering Solutions’ (ES) full value proposition as part of the TEAM25strategy and I am excited to contribute to this journey.

What does your job involve as a Project Manager at Coates?

As a Project Manager, I facilitate and support the engineering to achieve the desired goals within scope, time and budget. It is a journey, that provides frameworks and ways of working to execute ideas and concepts and make them a reality.

What drives you in your work?

The excitement of collaborating with a team to take an idea off paper and make it into a reality is incredibly rewarding. Also, the need to be agile, resilient and adaptable is crucial to the success of these projects.

What is Coates working on that excites you?

There are many exciting initiatives in the ES transformation program.

In the coming months, Coates ES will be streamlining and standardising its business process to create internal efficacies that will ultimately benefit customers.

The Technical Library is another project being developed in the system’s front end that will provide a single repository for customers to find out about Coates ES’ technical capabilities during the different stages of the ‘solutions’ journey.

Finally, the ES program has a solid R&D products pipeline with academia partnerships such as Monash University that together with our strong engineering expertise will deliver solutions with new and enhanced value to customers in various fronts from cost reduction to sustainability. The first of these products is the Quadshore 150 the world-first lightweight, heavy-duty structural support solution.

Why do you like working for Coates?

I am proud to work for a company that genuinely cares for safety, sustainability and giving back to the communities in which it operates via a number of initiatives and targets.

Coates’ business model is also diverse and new to me, so there are great opportunities to learn, meet new people and importantly grow within this role. The organisation is future focused with a dynamic transformation agenda supported by a clear and consistent strategy that is powered by a committed and passionate team of people.
