Lifetime achievement award for a career in construction

Liliana Mironov, has for more than 20 years, been and a member of Engineers Australia and was recently elected to the grade of Fellow, which is the highest recognition available to a professional in the industry.

At the recent NAWIC awards, Liliana was given the Doric Lifetime Achievement Award for 25 years of work in the construction sector.

She is a member and sits on policy review and awards panels for a number of organisations such as Office of Energy, Western Power, Lighting Society of Australia and New Zealand and Australian Institute of Architects, WA chapter.

Mironov is also a mentor and works with young engineers to help them expand on their own training and development.

In an exclusive interview with Inside Construction, and as part two of our three-part series on this year’s NAWIC awards winners – part one can be found here – Mironoy discusses how the construction sector has evolved over the years but says there is still a way to go for women within the sector.

How important is it to recognise women in construction?

The construction industry has been traditionally male dominated, however in recent years, it has been challenged by the rising number of females joining the construction workforce. The world is changing and while we take the best of the old ways, we must motivate people to do great work. “Best person for the job” is my motto, and therefore I believe that it is vital to recognise equally males and females and to unlock their potential!

What is your role in the company you work for?

I am a principal in WGE, UPD section manager and electrical senior project engineer.

What drew you to the construction sector?

I wanted to be an architect as I was fascinated by the variety of building designs, mixture of history and modern culture. I however was not accepted and started work in a large mining company as a draftsperson. I worked under the direction of engineers and was not allowed to ask too many questions.  I think my passion for knowledge and understanding on how things work, design and efficiency motivated me to enrol in engineering.

What challenges have you faced in the sector?

The biggest challenge always been the acceptance. In the beginning, some clients, work associates and contractors assumed I was a secretary providing assistance to the engineers. Slowly I formed new client relationships but still took a while to gain their trust.

Does the sector have or need to have an equality movement?

Of course, equal opportunities, diversity and increased EQ in the construction industry, as well as other sectors, is crucial for its future development and success.

Is it important to reach out to young women in schools and universities and encourage them to pursue a career in construction?

Absolutely. Knowledge is everything.  The industry must provide information, build suitable platforms and promote awareness for young people to consider the construction industry as a possible carrier path. A diverse workforce is a competitive advantage to all.

What does the future look like for women considering a career in construction and where would you like to see women in the future?

I would like each person despite their race, gender or cultural background have an opportunity and a fair go. To be treated the same as any another and be recognised as equal.
