Two new covered walkways are being installed in Austin Lane, Darwin, to revitalise the city’s central business district, supporting 40 jobs.
PTM Group is delivering the works, which aim to transform Darwin’s CBD into a pedestrian friendly space, improving connectivity for visitors and locals between Cavenagh Street, Austin Lane and the Smith Street Mall.
Consultation with property owners and businesses will soon begin and will address the design and construction of infrastructure and services along with the community activities and events that could take place, such as street parties and festivals.
This aims to create more engaging experiences for visitors and locals moving through Darwin city lanes to other destinations in the city and capturing the cooling benefits of breezes between buildings.
“Austin Lane is already an exciting space for displaying local artwork, with several beautiful street works on display, these works will further enhance the street and encourage more people to visit our CBD – creating further opportunities to deliver greater economic and social benefits in the city,” said Member for Port Darwin Paul Kirby.

The project is part of the $200 million Darwin City Deal and the Territory Government’s goal to create a cooler, revitalised CBD. This includes work on the Civic and State Square Masterplan Redevelopment.
The Chan Building Demolition tender has closed and is being assessed prior to awarding the works. Once the project is complete, it aims to unlock cool, green parklands for the community to enjoy and attract more people to visit, stay and invest.
“Local jobs are our priority, and these works on Austin Lane are supporting more than 40 local jobs,” said NT Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler.
“This project, along with the Civic and State Square Masterplan Redevelopment is about unlocking our cities potential. We are transforming the CBD so it can become a more attractive space for everyone to enjoy, driving more people to the city and more traffic into our local businesses.”
