Request for Tenders for Yatala Prison main works contract

Queensland tradies are being encouraged to take advantage of a $37.6 million training package to help the improve skills for big infrastructure projects.

Tenders are open for the main works contract on the $149 million Yatala Labour Prison redevelopment, which is expected to create up to 300 construction jobs in South Australia.

The project will see an additional 270 high security beds constructed along with critical supporting infrastructure at the state’s largest metropolitan prison.

The main works contract will include providing secure accommodation units, permitter fencing, visits/admissions building and kitchen building.

It was announced as part of the 2018-19 State Budget and supports the aims to improve the South Australian public prison system, strengthen security and drive down reoffending.

SA Correctional Services Minister Corey Wingard said the redevelopment will create a number of local employment opportunities across the life of the project.

“Local construction company SARAH Construction won the tender for the early works part of the project,” Wingard said.

“Already they have bought on around 20 local workers, with another 80 jobs estimated to be created at the peak of the early works project.”

Wingard said that in addition to the 100 employees engaged for early works, the main stage of the project would employ another 200 or so local contractors at its peak.

“That means more than 300 people will have been employed to work on the entire redevelopment,” he said.

“The benefits of this redevelopment are two-fold – helping to improve our State’s biggest metropolitan prison, while also employing a significant number of local contractors.”

Completion of the full development is estimated for April 2022.
