Construction has begun on a vertical school in Fishermans Bend, Port Melbourne, which will be four storeys tall and cater for up to 1100 students.

Fishermans Bend Secondary School, the school’s interim name, is one of the first vertical schools in Victoria aiming to cater for increasing demand.

The Victorian Government has invested $3.8 million in planning works for the school, which also benefits from the government’s $624.8 million investment into school construction and upgrades in the Victorian Budget 2019/20.

Local community consultations have helped shape the design of the school. Its architecture and materials aim to honour the area’s maritime and industrial history, with an environmentally sustainable design and high-tech amenities including a fabrication lab and robotics workshop.

An array of arts, food technology, sports and learning resource centre spaces will also be included that can be shared with the broader community.

The State Government aims to invest $6.1 billion to deliver more than 1400 school upgrades and 100 new schools by 2026.

“We’ll open 100 new schools by 2026 – creating thousands of jobs and ensuring every child has a great education at their local public school,” said Member for Albert Park Martin Foley.
