McConnell Dowell and Built Environs have reached the first major milestone on the Puhinui Station Upgrade, successfully deconstructing the central station ramp.
A joint venture between the two companies is delivering the Puhinui Station Upgrade and has developed an early works strategy for the project.
Around 350 tonnes of concrete were removed during the controlled demolition stage, which was finished in mid-October.
To undertake this work, three footbridge ramps that lead to the overbridge and train station needed to be supported. Scaffolding supported these segments before each was cut with a wire saw and removed during a track closure.

All of the existing platform assets have been removed to clear the way for the next stage of construction, with piling works underway to build the station’s foundations.
A 50-tonne drilling rig is installing 32 bored piles, some over 30 metres deep, to form the foundation for 23 pile caps to support the station structure.
The next milestone is the installation of a protection shield over the track to maintain safe access and egress for staff in and out of the rail corridor and to allow work to continue safely without delay or disruption.
