Construction is underway on the $11.85 million Sadadeen Substation to increase the reliability and security of the Alice Springs power network.
It will replace the existing building infrastructure and an 11-kilovolt air insulated switchgear will be installed to replace systems approaching the end of its life.
The upgrade will support up to 30 jobs during construction and will benefit the local hardware, freight and hotel businesses.
Substations ensure power users receive the right voltage for their needs by stepping up electricity voltage for transmission to send over long distance or stepping it down for distribution to households.

Works are expected to be complete by April 2020 with the new equipment fully operational by August 2020.
Northern Territory Renewables, Energy & Essential Services Minister, Dale Wakefield, said the government’s number on priority is to create local jobs and invest in the future of the Territory.
“The new Sadadeen Substation upgrade will increase the reliability and security of the Alice Springs power network, provide up to 30 construction jobs, as well as support local businesses during the construction phase.”
