Works are now underway to deliver the $76.3 million Monash Hospital emergency department and a new mental health, drug and alcohol hub.
The new emergency department will feature an additional 24 beds and 10 short-stay beds for patients requiring care for less than 24 hours.
It will also include a dedicated area for the treatment of children, to make a visit to the emergency room less stressful. Children will be separated from adult patients and treated in a calmer and less clinical environment.
Similar areas will be included in other hospitals such as University Hospital Geelong, Maroondah Hospital, Casey Hospital, Northern Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and Frankston Hospital.

“Monash Hospital has one of Melbourne’s busiest emergency departments – we’re making it bigger, safer and better for kids,” Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said.
“This upgrade will give families peace of mind that world-class care is just around the corner when someone is sick.”
The emergency department will also include a separate 24-hour short stay unit to treat more people with mental health or drug and alcohol problems in times of urgent need, as part of the Victorian Government’s $100.5 million commitment to build similar units in busy hospitals.
Patients will be assessed and treated by mental health and drug and alcohol specialists to provide the best care possible.
“Whether it’s building a special kids emergency department or new facilities to keep patients and staff safe, we’re backing our nurses and doctors to do what they do best,” said Health Minister Jenny Mikakos.
