Contractor selected to build $221M sports facility

A builder has been selected to deliver the largest aquatic and indoor recreation community centre in New Zealand.

CPB Contractors, a member of the CIMIC Group, has been selected by Ōtākaro Ltd to deliver the $221 million Christchurch Metro Sports Facility.

Construction will include a 10-lane competition swimming pool with seating for 1000 spectators, swim leisure area, nine indoor netball and basketball courts and a show court with retractable seating for 2500 spectators.

The facility aims to provide a space to host local and international events.

“This project continues CPB Contractors’ long track record of providing important infrastructure in New Zealand,” CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Michael Wright said.

“In particular, CPB Contractors has taken a leading role delivering critical infrastructure for the Christchurch community, including the Christchurch Hospital Acute Services Building and Te Pae the Christchurch convention and exhibition centre, both currently in delivery.”

CPB Contractors Managing Director Juan Santamaria said CPB Contractors will draw on local and international expertise to deliver the infrastructure project.

“CPB Contractors is strongly focused on providing opportunities for local businesses and working closely with Ōtākaro Ltd to safely deliver this important new facility,” Santamaria said.

Construction is expected to begin in May 2019 and be completed in late 2021.
