VIC Govt launches review into planning approvals to slash red tape

NSW commits $3B to build $100B construction jobs pipeline

The Victorian Government has ordered a comprehensive review of the state’s building and planning approvals processes to streamline local and state government systems.

Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas and Planning Minister Richard Wynne have instructed the Red Tape Commissioner to complete the review, which aims to remove delays and support the delivery of housing and infrastructure.

It will be built upon the findings of the Essential Services Commission review of electricity connection delays and identify ways to further improve early-building works approvals and utility connections.

Currently Victoria’s planning system suffers from, multiple referral processes and duplications, as well as variable internal referral processes within local government.

The review will focus on these referral processes and work in consultation with construction industry experts to improve efficiencies.

Findings of the review are to be handed to the government by the end of the year.

“This comprehensive review will be the catalyst for much needed change in Victoria’s planning systems,” Pallas said.

“It will reduce red tape and create simpler approval processes – boosting our capacity to deliver the housing, business and infrastructure investment Victoria needs.”

Wynne said the Victorian Government aims to create a more streamlined, efficient and effective planning system to deliver construction projects faster.

“We’re striking the right balance between thorough scrutiny and efficiency in our planning decisions,” Wynne said.
