Local builder to construct WA stadium

The Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) has called for civil construction skills to be listed as essential on the Federal Government's National Skills Needs List to help the sector attract new workers and upskill the existing workforce.

A local construction company has been selected to build the Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium in Western Australia.

Esperance-based Sime Building and Construction has won the tender to construct the $8.36 million indoor sports and recreation centre following a tender process led by the Shire of Esperance.

Local content is expected to exceed 75 per cent for the construction of the project, with estimated flow on benefits for the regional economy.

The new centre aims to enhance regional amenities and ensure residents can maintain a healthy lifestyle.

It includes new indoor courts, kiosk, kitchen, change room facilities, and storage spaces for user groups.

The Esperance Sports Stadium will also act as a venue for local, regional and state events such as the Esperance Agricultural show.

WA Acting Regional Development Minister Dave Kelly said the project will improve liveability, increase participation in sport and recreation and provide a modern venue for major events.

“The Shire of Esperance has aligned their tender processes with the State Government’s commitment to maximising local content on government projects,” Kelly said.

“Awarding this tender to an Esperance-based construction company will support local businesses and jobs, and further drive regional capacity.”

WA Agricultural Region MLC Darren West said the government is working hard to ensure local business win local tenders.

“After many years of waiting by the Esperance community, the State Government is finally getting the Esperance Stadium built – and by locals.”

The WA Government invested $4.78 million into the centre. Construction is expected to commence in May 2019, with an expected build time of 12 months. The first step is to build a new car park, which will be completed by the end of August.
