WA recruits new WorkSafe inspectors

A united group of nine industry bodies have come together to tell those working in the construction industry to treat the current COVID-19 situation with the highest importance and adhere to all recommended safety procedures.

The Western Australian Government has created new WorkSafe inspector roles to help improve safety across the state’s worksites.

Six new roles have been introduced, lifting the total number of inspectors from 93 to 99. Four of the new inspectors commenced within the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, with the remaining two to commence in mid-2019.

The inspectors will help improve the timeliness of investigations and requests to attend and provide additional availability of inspector resources in regional WA.

They will also aim to support the increasing community focus on mental health in the workplace and recognise the rise in complex psychosocial matters being referred to the department.

WA Industrial Relations Minister Bill Johnston said the initiative is part of the State Government’s commitment to prioritising the safety and health of workers in WA.

“I’m pleased to announce that once all the inspectors are trained and ready, it’s expected WorkSafe services and investigative resources will improve,” he said.

“There’s always more to be done, but I’m pleased these extra resources have been made available.”
