Case study: Volvo pavers reinforce Indonesian airport runway

In 2017, the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia was the world’s 17th busiest with 63 million passengers.

“The double tamper on the ABG7820B paver really helps deliver excellent overlay quality,” said Sugeng Santoso, senior manager of procurement for PT Hutama Karya.

“For a project with such strict time limitations and specifications, this is especially important since we can’t afford additional time to correct errors.”

With only a narrow window of time to work during the night, when there are no flight activities, the ABG7820B paver’s high-quality finish and efficiency makes it ideal for overlaying the 3.6km long and 60m wide runway at Terminal 2 with asphalt. The runway requires an overlay thickness of 19cm, comprising two 7cm layers of asphalt concrete binder course and one 5cm layer of asphalt concrete wearing course.

The ABG7820B’s patented combination of double tampers with screed vibrations enables the paver to achieve the highest possible degree of compaction – significantly reducing the need for subsequent roller compaction.

“The ABG7820B allowed us to achieve evenness on the mat’s surface to ensure a smooth ride for flights landing at and taking off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport,” Santoso said.

On site since February 2017, the ABG7820B tracked pavers are expected to remain until the project’s scheduled completion at the end of 2018. Powered by a 170kW Volvo D7 engine, the ABG7820B features a maximum paving width of 6m and a paving output of 900t per hour.

The ABG7820B units are part of PT Hutama Karya’s large Volvo fleet, which includes seven EC210D excavators; two SD110 soil compactors; and an EC140 BLC excavator. The company acquired these machines through local Volvo CE dealer PT Indotruck Utama (ITU), whose dedicated service support has helped ensure high machine uptime.

“Though Volvo machines are very reliable, we still need regular maintenance or face the occasional hiccup. In both these situations, ITU is very responsive and helpful despite the odd hours of our operations,” Santoso said.
