How the IATC is addressing construction skills shortages

The Institute of Applied Technology – Construction (IATC) is helping to tackle some of the construction industry’s biggest challenges: labour shortages, a lack of housing supply, cost overruns, project delays and building defects.

Through flexible, targeted training designed in partnership with industry leaders, the IATC is equipping professionals with the skills needed to lift sector capability and make construction careers more appealing.

Based in Kingswood and offering many courses online, the IATC focuses on project management, leadership and digital construction skills. Its programs are delivered in partnership with TAFE NSW, Western Sydney University and CPB Contractors, ensuring the training stays connected to industry needs. This co-design approach allows IATC to provide qualifications that are immediately relevant to construction workplaces.

Rather than lengthy courses, the IATC offers “bite-sized” microcredentials that allow construction professionals to upskill quickly and flexibly. The model rethinks traditional vocational education and provides practical, real-world learning.

One professional who has benefited from the IATC’s approach is Connor Jorgensen, 29, an architect and project leader with a passion for innovative architecture, urban design and industrial design.

After completing a master’s degree and scholarship at the Politecnico di Milano, Jorgensen turned to the IATC in 2024 to undertake a microcredential in Contract Administration in Construction, a key requirement for registration in architecture.

“The course wasn’t academic or fluffy and gave me a lot of real-world context. Even though I had graduated from an extremely well-respected international school, I found IATC appealing as the courses were short, targeted and they supplemented my learning,” he said.

“My teacher ran his own company in the field he was teaching, and the course was online so it allowed me to study around my busy lifestyle.”

As demand for construction skills continues to rise, training solutions such as those offered by the IATC are helping the industry build a stronger future, one qualification at a time.
