Engineering consultant Stantec has helped deliver a 6 Star Green Star Communities rating for New Epping, a major urban regeneration project in Melbourne’s north. Certified by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), the rating represents world leadership in sustainable development.
The certification places New Epping among a select group of Victorian projects to achieve this status, recognising performance across governance, liveability, economic prosperity, environment and innovation.
Working in partnership with developer Riverlee, Stantec developed a tailored sustainability framework and provided expertise across water, transport, social impact and sustainability planning.
Kenneth Yuen, sustainability project technical lead at Stantec, said the outcome reflects strong collaboration and a shared commitment to the client’s vision.
“Our role was to help shape that vision into a framework that could be implemented and measured across the life of the development,” said Yuen. “It required deep coordination across disciplines and a shared commitment to pushing boundaries.”

Spanning 51 hectares, New Epping is transforming a former brownfield site into a vibrant mixed-use precinct. Stantec’s work supported sustainable water management, active transport planning and community-focused design.
The project received a perfect score in the innovation category, supported by initiatives such as passive irrigation systems for urban greening and the integration of Wurundjeri cultural knowledge into the design of the Edgar’s Creek Corridor.
Sumari Veal, water team leader at Stantec, said the restoration of Edgar’s Creek was central to the achievement.
“Our water team’s efforts in restoring Edgar’s Creek as a flood-resilient green corridor have been instrumental in achieving this rating,” said Veal.
Danielle Cruickshank, principal transport planner at Stantec, said embedding sustainability early was key.
“Our transport team’s development of a Green Travel Plan to prioritise active and public transport has been crucial in supporting the project’s sustainability goals,” said Cruickshank.
Stantec hopes New Epping will serve as a model for future community developments.
