Inland Rail to start construction at Benalla

Construction is set to begin on the long-anticipated revamp of Benalla railway station, with Inland Rail and construction partner John Holland now preparing the site for major works.

The project will see the removal of the existing pedestrian underpass to make way for a new, accessible underpass with lifts and pathways – part of broader modifications to accommodate double-stacked freight trains. The works also include relocating the east track to form a new west track, building a new platform, and creating an open forecourt and upgraded car park.

Benalla is one of eight Inland Rail Beveridge to Albury (B2A) Tranche 2 sites now under construction, alongside locations including Broadford, Wandong, the Hume Freeway at Seymour and Tallarook, and Euroa.

Scott Anderson, acting delivery director for Inland Rail’s B2A section, said the start of construction at Benalla marked another key milestone for the program.

“We’ve worked closely with the Benalla community for many years to design a safer and more accessible railway station precinct the community will enjoy for decades,” said Anderson. “The modified station precinct will deliver many improvements on the current site, and we thank local communities for their patience and understanding as we carry out this transformative work.”

Once complete, Inland Rail will provide a fast freight link from Melbourne to Brisbane, improving connectivity for regional producers and opening new pathways to domestic and global markets.
