Construction is underway on foundation works for the $807.3 million Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) Emergency Department Expansion project in Western Australia.
The project is funded through the $2 billion Building Hospitals Fund, which forms part of the WA Government’s $5.5 billion investment in health infrastructure.
Premier Roger Cook said the sod-turn marks a key step in delivering a modern emergency department that will support the region for decades to come.
“This project is part of our record investment in hospitals, and it’s about ensuring our emergency departments can meet growing demand now and into the future,” said Cook. “We’re not just planning for the future, we’re building it.”

The new emergency department will be located at the north-western end of the RPH campus on Wellington Street in the Perth CBD, about 500 metres from the existing emergency department.
The multi-storey building will include two floors for the expanded emergency department, increasing hospital services and capacity.
Construction will progress while the existing emergency department continues to operate, ensuring patients can continue to access care throughout delivery.
Health Minister Meredith Hammat said the project is a positive development for RPH and the patients it supports.
“We are delivering a bigger, more capable emergency department while ensuring the current ED continues to operate without disruption,” said Hammat. “This ED means more beds, more capacity, and improved patient flow for our state’s leading trauma hospital.”
Once complete, the project will deliver increased acute care and fast-track capacity, additional ambulance bays, improved patient flow, more inpatient capacity to support future growth, and a new link to the existing hospital to integrate care and operations.
The project also forms the starting point for the long-term redevelopment of the RPH precinct, with master planning underway to guide future development. The masterplan will consider current and future models of care and ways to optimise the precinct for health and community benefits. A detailed masterplan is expected to be delivered later this year.
