The proposed design of Bradfield City Centre’s Second Building has been released for exhibition. Spanning three levels and over 12,000 square metres, the new facility will be located opposite the First Building, together laying the foundation of the new city as a hub of innovation and research.

The Second Building will include space for industry tenants, an advanced manufacturing hall, research laboratory facilities with cleanrooms, and publicly accessible green spaces. It will also be home to advanced manufacturing technology and expert technicians, housing stage two of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF). With a focus on micro-electronics and semi-conductor packaging, the AMRF aims to help manufacturing businesses scale up, contributing to Western Sydney’s economic development.

Jennifer Westacott, chair of the Western Parkland City Authority, described the unveiling as another exciting step towards realising Australia’s newest city.

“Second Building will be a thriving, global economic hub, and a place for the future of advanced manufacturing in Western Sydney,” said Westacott. “It will deliver almost 300 jobs during the construction phase and more than 400 jobs for engineers, researchers, support staff and high-tech businesses once complete.”

“The AMRF is a concept centred around collaboration and in keeping with that principle, Second Building will be a catalyst for a new innovation ecosystem at Bradfield City Centre.”

Designed by Architectus in collaboration with Aileen Sage Architects and Jacobs, the Second Building continues the innovative design principles underpinning the First Building. With advanced functionality, Connection to Country, and a focus on sustainability, these buildings set a benchmark for the future city.

Matthew Todd, project director at Architectus, expressed the company’s honour in leading the design for the landmark building.

“Bringing together our collective experience in design excellence, technical facility expertise, and sensitive cultural and site responses, our team will draw on a long history of collaborations and a shared vision to kick-start an innovation powerhouse of advanced manufacturing in Bradfield City Centre,” said Todd.

Amelia Holliday and Isabelle Toland, directors of Aileen Sage, also shared their enthusiasm for contributing to “what will be a place for the future”.

“Drawing on key lessons from Country, our design process is based around multiple conversations, our collective understanding of old and new technologies, our diverse world views, and our appreciation for innovation,” said Holliday and Toland. “These values informed our collaborative design approach.”

The design for the Second Building is on exhibition until 17 June 2024, through the NSW Planning Portal. Subject to approvals, construction is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed by 2026.
