As Australia's epicentre for drone technology, Brisbane is flying onto the radar of innovators and manufacturers looking for a commercial edge as the city prepares for the world's drone experts to descend in August this year.
The inaugural three-day Congress is being held from Thursday August 31 and focusses on the business application of drones, with speakers, exhibitors and delegates expected to come from China, the US, Canada and the UK.
Leader in the field and World of Drones Congress Convenor Dr Catherine Ball (PhD Spatial Ecology) works across projects using robotics and new technology that meets environmental protection. She sees the Congress as the catalyst needed to take Australia forward.
"For businesses, drones are a game changer, and they have the potential to help solve some of Australia's biggest challenges," she said.
"We are recognised internationally as a breeding ground for world-leading drone technology and the congress is our opportunity to strengthen Australia's hold on an innovation future."
Queensland's first Chief Entrepreneur, Mark Sowerby is speaking at the Congress and said there is huge potential for drone technology in the state.
"Queensland has everything it takes to be a leader in drone technology — the researchers, tech talent and startups that can get drone technology into sectors that are ready to test and use it like mining, agriculture and film," he said.
"The Congress is our chance to prove it and get our tech into global markets."
A world-first Congress of its kind, the speaker line up includes Dr Karen Joyce, Senior Lecturer in Remote Sensing, James Cook University; Romeo Durscher, Director of Education at DJI (Chinese drone manufacturer); Lucy Turnbull AO, Chief Commissioner of Greater Sydney Commission and Tracey Vieira, CEO Screen Queensland.
Presented in four segments - conference, expo, tournament and outreach program - the Congress will focus on four themes including Business and Education, Creative Industries, Industry Applications and Regulation, and Environment.
Tickets to the Congress give delegates access to the exhibition a showcase of the latest innovations in drone technology, and the ideal platform for business matching, industry development and commercialisation.
